Fructose and Pancreatic Cancer

Countless articles caution about the dangers of high fructose corn syrup, but check this one out if you are still a non-believer: “Cancer Cells Feed on Fructose, Study Finds.”

Some of the words in the article jump right off the page: “Research shows the refined sugar helps cancer cells proliferate. Pancreatic tumor cells use fructose to divide and proliferate.”

Patrick Swayze is one of a long list of celebrities to be stricken down with deadly pancreatic cancer. The disease is the same one that killed Michael Landon in 1991. Other stars who have died from pancreatic include Fred Gwynne, Jack Benny, Rex Harrison, Donna Reed, Fernando Lamas, Richard Crenna, and Joan Crawford. Pancreatic cancer recently claimed the life of Luciano Pavarotti. President Jimmy Carter lost four family members to pancreatic cancer. Who do you know who has been stricken with this deadly disease?

The research findings demonstrated that tumor cells fed both glucose and fructose used the sugars in two different ways. Tumor cells thrive on sugar but they used the fructose to proliferate. Their findings, published in the journal Cancer Research, may help explain other studies that have linked fructose intake with pancreatic cancer, one of the deadliest cancer types.

High fructose corn syrup is also attributed to the obesity epidemic in America. Obesity has been well established as a key contributor to diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

The article states, U.S. consumption of high fructose corn syrup went up 1,000 percent between 1970 and 1990, researchers reported in 2004 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

Isn’t it about time we speak out to stop the needless suffering attributed to the amount of high fructose corn syrup added to our food in America? Better yet, how about boycotting the “non-food” items in our diet, and instead reach for the organic, non-processed foods?
